As always spot on, so nice to hear a voice of calm reason midst all of the hysteria! Your comment about people loving simplistic narratives, is unfortunately far to true and may explain much of today's social malaise.
I’m wondering how much Perplexity actually did. I haven’t done a ton of experimenting on Hyperbolic and other hosts, but it sounds like R1 wasn’t all that censored to begin with. Not to the level of Llama anyway. And that R1-Zero is basically entirely uncensored. I know at least some of the more obvious censoring on DeepSeek’s site (starts to give an answer and blanks out before saying it can’t) is an additional layer on top that isn’t in the weights.
I think the 'crash' in Nvidia's share price was both an overreaction of the market, and an overreaction of the media to the overreaction of the market. The recovery has already begun. The price has been fluctuating around $140 since October, with no significant trend up or down. As of now, it is back where it was on 18 December 2024, which is a price it only passed for the first time in June 2024, and has fallen below twice since then. Fundamentally, nothing has changed, and the market will quickly reflect that.
If anything, this could be good news for Nvidia. If it is possible to obtain state of the art results with less hardware, that opens up the market to a larger number of smaller players. Arguably, one of the biggest risks faced by Nvidia at present is its high exposure to a small number of large customers. Long term, it will be better off with a more diverse customer base.
I’m a bit worried about the attitude towards data security in the AI sector. Probably 99% of the users use the web service or app, and thus dismissing the issue by just noting “you can run it locally” is dismissing it too easily. Although there is irony also in not caring about the data.

Yeah, that one goes well beyond DeepSeek sadly

That's my take as well. It's a layer on top that detects whether the model is saying something it shouldn't

This. If I hadn't been super busy the other day I would have taken the chance to grab a bunch of NVidia stock knowing it was going to recover soon.

Great summary, many thanks.
